During the 1910s young girls wore big bows on their hair that fell onto the head, and so they became known as "flappers". The name would stick with this generation, as they grew up in the 1920s.

It's interesting that one of the flapper looks was the platinum blonde with a tan. In real life these days it's difficult to pull it off without being tacky, but at least in these old illustrations it looked very elegant. I've seen a few photos of Carole Lombard where she pulled off the look.
