During the 1910s young girls wore big bows on their hair that fell onto the head, and so they became known as "flappers". The name would stick with this generation, as they grew up in the 1920s.

wow, that looks different from what i think of when i think of gloria swanson!
She even did musicals in her earlier days! But people always think of her in Sunset Boulevard. I was saw this biography on television, and someone said that even in her 80s she could turn people's heads as she walked down the street, because she was so beautiful and stylish -- literally a head turner!
